How did the name Heiligenblut come about!
According to legend, Briccius died in a snowstorm in 914 while trying to cross the Alps. He was on his way from Constantinomel to his homeland Denmark. Countrymen at the scene of the accident noticed 3 ears of wheat sticking out of the snow. The men wanted to take the body to the graveyard for burial by means of carts that had been fetched. When the two oxen that had pulled the cart suddenly could not go any further, the body was buried at this spot. After some time, however, one of the dead man's feet protruded from the burial mound. A small vial containing a few drops of holy blood was discovered in the calf of Briccius. This turned out to be a real treasure. Soon afterwards, a chapel was built on the site of the accident - the Briccius Chapel. A small chapel was also built over the grave of Briccius, where the present magnificent pilgrimage church was built in 1483.
This vial has been kept in the church of Heiligenblut ever since. Here it can still be admired. We tell you where you can find it in this great church. The tomb of Briccius has also been preserved in the crypt.
